Brief History

Hiran Minaar (Minaret of the Antelope) is a monument built in the form of a minaret to commemorate the pet antelope “Mans Raaj” of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The minaret was erected on the grave of the pet, under the supervision of Sikandar Mueen, according to “Tuzk-e-Jahangiri”. On the epitaph, it was written, “In this enchanting place, God fearing Nur-u-Deen Jahangir, lord of the world, captured an antelope, which after forgoing its wild habits became the head of the royal antelopes.”
The height of the minaret was 130 feet, which became 110 feet after the fall of its top storey.
During his era, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the architect of wonders, ordered the construction of a large pond, measuring 890 feet in length and 750 feet in width, and a “Bara Dari” in the center of the pond. “Bara Dari” is a building with a polygon shape in plan, with as many doors as the sides of the polygon. A bridge like path leads to “Bara Dari” from outside the pond. A water channel was constructed which supplied water from river Ravi.
Hiran Minaar is situated in Sheikhupura, near Lahore.
